FAO and OAE Collaborate to Promote Reducing Undernourishment and Saving Food

The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE), in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , celebrated the auspicious occasion of the 60th Birthday Anniversary of  Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn by organizing an exhibition under the theme  “Less undernourishment; Save Food” during 2-6 April 2015, in Nan province. Nan province was one of the poorest provinces in Thailand; therefore HRH Princess initiated many projects in the area to tackle the problem and develop local people’s livelihood. The projects have over the years contributed to improving the livelihoods of people in Nan province.

The exhibition aimed to raise awareness of food security, and to educate the local people about food insecurity on both the supply side and demand side, especially, food waste and food losses. Approximately 450 people participated the exhibition and joined OAE’s activities, particularly on calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI). On the basis of the these measurements,  approximately 8 percent of those surveyed were undernourished while 68 percent of those surveyed, were overweight which alerted us the possibility of imbalanced nutrition.
